M+
The new (and already unmissable) M+ museum combines contemporary art, high-quality temporary exhibitions and bold architecture!
M+, one of Hong Kong's newest museums, is part of the dynamic West Kowloon Cultural District, alongside the Palace Museum. Opening at the end of 2021, it has rapidly earned a reputation for excellence, becoming one of the city's top museums. Its bold architecture, by architects Herzog & de Meuron, is as grand from the outside as it is from the inside. A must-see!
The museum covers 65,000m2, devoted to modern and contemporary visual arts. With 33 galleries, it presents a wide range of works, from design and architecture to the moving image and visual culture of the 20th and 21st centuries. The permanent collections include striking pieces, such as a life-size installation depicting world leaders caricatured as bedridden people in wheelchairs that crash into each other.
Temporary exhibitions, always captivating, are often staged in partnership with major institutions, notably Parisian and American museums. Among the outstanding exhibitions is one dedicated to the architect I. M. Pei, famous for the Louvre Pyramid and the Bank of China, and one on the exploration of black and white in contemporary art.
The M+ outdoor screen is considered one of the largest outdoor screens in the world. Measuring 220 metres long and 10 metres high, it is designed to be a spectacular projection platform that draws attention as far as Hong Kong Island opposite.
