KOWLOON PARK
Park in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, featuring an aviary, a pond, a banyan tree enclosure and Chinese gardens...
Kowloon Park, with its 14 hectares, is a welcome haven of peace in the heart of one of Hong Kong's busiest districts. Formerly the site of Whitfield Barracks, where Indian soldiers of the British army were housed, the park is now a must-see place for relaxation. At the entrance, on Nathan Road, stands the Kowloon Mosque, a white marble edifice with four minarets. Non-Muslims can enter, but it's advisable to ask permission and remove your shoes. As soon as you enter the park, the hustle and bustle of the city fades away to make way for a peaceful atmosphere. Elderly people are practicing tai chi under the trees, children are running around, and others are quietly napping on the benches.
The pink flamingo lake (dozens of them!) amazes and delights young and old alike. There's also a Chinese garden with pavilions and ponds for a Zen atmosphere, and an aviary (although, to be honest, far less interesting than the one in Hong Kong Park at Admiralty). For more energetic activity, the sports fields and running trail are just the thing, not to mention the public swimming pool, which is very popular in summer.
At weekends, the park comes alive with martial arts demonstrations and scenes of everyday life, such as Hong Kongers hurriedly wolfing down a sandwich before returning to their daily routine. Kowloon Park is a place to relax and enjoy life, and well worth a visit.
