Yuantong Temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Kunming. Originally built under the Tang Dynasty (618-907) under the name Putuoluo, it is enlarged by the Yuan (1276-1368) and then takes its current name: the Temple of Understanding All Things. Yuantong is in fact one of the 32 names of the goddess Guanyin, whose statue in the thousand arms rests in a small pavilion on the octagonal roof in the middle of a water basin.
