This colonial house was first a royal prison. It was here that in 1819, the first Council in Caracas met. This meeting, which marked the beginning of the country's independence, was then caused by Napoleon's invasion of Spain.
The Caraqueños, who were concerned about the dismissal of Fernand VII, met to elect a provisional government, without even preventing Captain General Emparán. Faced with Emparán's refusal to recognise an authority other than Fernand VII, the Council, backed by the street, proclaimed Supreme Junta. On 19 April, the junta made public the first act of emancipation of Venezuela, confirmed on 5 July 1811 during the declaration of independence.
Where does the yellow colour of this monument come from? Some claim that it was painted in yellow by the authorities, when it became an official residence, to make it forget its dark past in prison. Others say that to celebrate his election as president, Guzmán Blanco made it yellow, the color of the Partido Liberal. In any case, the Yellow House is now home to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
