The forts of San Francisco (1641) and San Diego de Alcalá (1747) were built to protect access to the Orinoco inland lands in the th and th centuries.

From Puerto Ordaz it takes an hour, the road is paved. You can go alone, with an agency from Puerto Ordaz or Orinoco Discovery with a few kilometres (see Orinoco delta region for coordinates).
