It was on the structure of the former Del Carmen school and the Santo Domingo temple dating back to 1637 that was built by the Franciscan church (1862). Inaugurated in 1866, it has endured five earthquakes. Her name commemorates Sainte-Inés Day, where a handful of people survived the 600 Indian attack on January 21, 1572. Rebuilt fully in 1929, the cupola and interior windows are remarkable. The image of Santa Inés Romana, declared as the lawyer and patron of Cumaná by King Philippe II on 3 July 1591, would have been made by the pirates who ransacked the city in 1570. We will also note the statue of the Virgin, which is over four centuries old. Next to the sanctuary, you can see the ruins of the house where the large Ayacucho marshal was christened… destroyed during the earthquake of 1929.
