ELY CATHEDRAL
Founded by the Saxon Queen Saint Etheldreide in 637, the cathedral was destroyed by the Danes in 870, before being rebuilt into a Benedictine community in 970. But its construction itself began in 1083, on the orders of Father Simeon. The Octagon Tower, dating from 1322, was designed according to Alan of Walsingham's plans to replace the collapsed Romanesque tower. Also worth a visit are The Wet Tower, The Prior's Door, with Scandinavian decorations from 1130-1170, and The Lady Chapel, from 1349, the largest in England. Concerts are regularly organised and Cambridge choirs perform there once a year.
