Built after the death of Saint Thomas Becket to accommodate pilgrims, this 12th century monument is now open to the public. We visit the entrance, the chapel of the dead, the crypt which also served as a dormitory for up to twelve people, as well as the refectory and its early 13th century fresco. The place is quiet and moving. The adjacent Franciscan Garden is the site of the Greyfriars Chapel, built in 1267 and the oldest Franciscan building in England. The gardens offer a haven of peace.
