The ruins of Pevensey Castle on the edge of Eastbourne are steeped in history. In 1066, Duke William of Normandy landed in the nearby bay and took refuge in this castle, built by the Romans in the 4th century. Later, he marched his army along the coast to Hastings. During the 11th and 12th centuries, the Normans added a solid gateway and fortifications, before installing a drawbridge in the 13th century. It's an ancient site, emblematic of English history.
