PORTSMOUTH HISTORIC DOCKYARD
Portsmouth is famous for its rich maritime heritage, and the Historic Dockyard is where the vast majority of its attractions are concentrated. All accessible with the same ticket, it's an easy day out. Everything here illustrates the military and naval past not only of the region, but of the whole country. A must-see!
HMS Warrior: not to be missed, this is the sole survivor of Queen Victoria's Black Battle Fleet. Launched in 1860, she was the world's first battleship and could carry up to 700 men. She can be sailed or steamed, and immersing yourself in her bowels is a fascinating experience.
HMS Victory: this is the second star attraction of the visit. This ship is none other than that of Admiral Nelson, who distinguished himself during the Battle of Trafalgar against the French. Launched in 1765, it is the oldest armed warship in the world. Carrying 850 men, this marvellous witness to history reveals the conditions in which they lived.
The Mary Rose: this captivating tour reveals the remains of Henry VIII's ship, raised from the bottom of the sea where she lay in 1982. Named after his favorite sister and the Tudor emblem (the rose), this warship flagship served in the Royal Navy for 34 years. But in 1545, she tragically sank in a battle with the French, taking almost the entire crew (700 men) with her.
National Museum of the Royal Navy: for all you need to know about the habits and customs of the Royal Navy, its fleet and its history, this is the place to go. Discover Admiral Nelson's victories, the arrival of women in the navy, and the hour-by-hour reconstruction of the Battle of Trafalgar.
Boathouse 4: opened in July 2015, here you can learn more about shipbuilding and its know-how, while admiring a large collection of small boats.
HMS M.33: landed in August 2015 to mark the centenary of the Great War, this is the only British ship still visible that took part in the famous Battle of Gallipoli.
Action Stations & Laser Quest : the aim here is to immerse visitors in the life and activities of the Royal Navy, with fun attractions aimed at younger visitors.
Royal Navy Submarine Museum (Gosport): take the waterbus to Gosport to meet the HMS Alliance, the only surviving World War II submarine.
