The ruins of this 12th-century castle stand in the centre of Winchester and bear witness to a past greatness, which saw Mary I celebrate her marriage with Philip II of Spain here. Destroyed in 1646 during the First Civil War, only a few old stones remain, but it helps to give the city its charm and recalls its former role of power and importance in English history. A visit that is worth the detour for lovers of old stones and for the English charm that reigns on the site.
