CARISBROOKE CASTLE
In the 13th century, Lady Isabella de Redvers became mistress of this castle, whose history probably dates back to the Roman occupation. She ruled the Isle of Wight for thirty years and enlarged the building, embellishing and innovating it by using glass for the windows. Later the site was transformed into a royal fortress and was the prison of Charles I around 1650, who tried in vain to escape from it. He even got stuck between the bars during an attempt... It is also here that his daughter Elisabeth died, held prisoner and in poor health.
