This is the most important English fortress built in the 17th century to protect against a threat from the Dutch, not the French. The fortress encompasses the site of the previous fort built by Sir Francis Drake in 1590, and features the Royal Chapel of St. Katherine. Today, the 29th Royal Artillery Commando occupies the site. Please note that due to its nature as a still-operational military establishment, visits may be suspended or cancelled without notice.
