ST MICHAEL'S MOUNT
The resemblance between this small island and the French Mont Saint-Michel is striking. And with good reason: in the 11th century, Edward the Confessor bequeathed it to the Benedictine monks who had built the Norman abbey we know today. As early as the5th century, a church was erected here after fishermen had a vision of Saint Michael. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims flocked here and it also served as a shelter for the Duke of Oxford during the War of the Roses, suffering a 26-week siege. It can be reached on foot at low tide or by boat at high tide.
