PARISH CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST
Next to the Roman amphitheatre and the western entrance to Grosvenor Park stands this church, whose history dates back to the Saxon leaders of the 7th century. According to legend, King Harold took refuge there after his defeat in Hastings in 1066. The building as it is known today dates back to 1075 and remained a cathedral until the Reformation in 1541. In 1838, the organ was imported from Westminster Abbey, where it had been used for Queen Victoria's coronation. Today, the church charms with its medieval air and the ruins of its ancestor are visible behind the choir.
