There is not much left of the castle, built in 1225 by Ranulf, Earl of Chester. Its entrance flanked by two massive towers is spectacular, however, and its location at the top of a rock over 100 metres high offers superb views of the Cheshire countryside. The site also houses a museum that presents the history of the site during the First English Revolution, which opposed royalists and parliamentarians from 1642 to 1649.
