SHREWSBURY ABBEY
Abbey – Monastery – Convent

Founded in 1083 on a former Saxon wooden chapel by a lieutenant of William the Conqueror, this abbey included a cloister, a refectory, a garden and a dormitory at the height of its glory. That was without counting on Thomas Telford, who had a large part of it cut down in 1836 to build a road... Nevertheless, there are still some beautiful remains and the main building, with beautiful stained glass windows and recumbent tiles that tell the tumultuous story of its history through the centuries and wars.
