CENTRAL VIKING JORVIK
From the 9th to the 10th centuries, the Vikings occupied the whole of northern England and made Jorvik their capital, where the current city stands. Just thirty years ago, local archaeologists brought out some 40,000 relics and artifacts from the period. This museum then became obvious. It opens with a series of screens and panels presenting the historical context of the Scandinavian invasions. A shuttle then leads to the heart of a reconstituted village with its workers, shops, workshops and interiors. The smells are authentic and the comments are available in French. The visit continues with the treasures that the earth has preserved to this day, and we evolve above the ruins of excavated dwellings. Skeletons, coins, jewellery, utensils, helmets and weapons: history lovers will appreciate it. There is sometimes a line at the entrance and a fellow in a suit announces the tone.
The Dig: by the same creators, this attraction offers children the opportunity to play archaeological apprentice by digging the land for remains, from the Romans to the Victorian era, the Vikings and the Middle Ages. Bones, statuettes, masks and many others (St. Saviourgate, same telephone number).
