WILLIAMSON TUNNELS HERITAGE CENTRE
If the Mersey Tunnel has put you in a frenzy and if you are not afraid of the depths, this attraction gives you a very strange story! For 30 years, we dug the earth for… nothing. Or to say otherwise, because all work deserves salary! In order to compensate for the lack of chronic jobs hitting Liverpool in the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars, Joseph Williamson, a rich and well-intentioned man, offered unemployed workers this activity in exchange for daily wages. Some also say that he was fanatic and wanted to escape the end of the world… However, between 1810 and 1840, this veritable underground labyrinth serpenté in the entrailles of the city. It's a 40-minute journey, punctuated by all the amazing anecdotes of one another. The scale of the hard work and no other purpose for workers than their survival makes sense.
