WORLD MUSEUM
It is THE general museum of Liverpool. From archaeology to natural history, ethnology and science, nothing is missing. This has been the case since 1851 when it was still in its infancy, when it was only the Derby Museum on Duke Street. Over time, its collections have been enriched with objects brought back from all over the world by ships returning to port. So much so that today there are more than a million of them! In the History section, you can marvel at Egyptian mummies, samurai armours, Anglo-Saxon treasures, Celtic and medieval relics or masterpieces from Greek and Roman antiquity. No less than 5,000 pieces were bequeathed by the only John Garstang, an Egyptologist who died in 1867. In terms of ethnology, 40,000 artifacts have been collected on five continents by missionaries and researchers in the Amazon, Tibet, New Zealand and elsewhere. There is also a beautiful place dedicated to science and geology, with fossils, rocks and minerals, as well as botany, astronomy, oceanography and zoology sections, offering meteorites of Mars or inventories of vertebrate and invertebrate specimens, sometimes living. More surprising: a compilation of 1,200 clocks and an aquarium of fish from both Anglesey and Australia. Also a library of 10,000 volumes. You will have understood it, it is a little bit like the Louvre liverpuldien, not to be missed under any circumstances. Don't forget to take a map at the reception desk!
During our visit, the aquarium was closed for renovations, so check before your visit.
