ST. GEORGE'S HALL

This architectural jewel from the early 19th century was built as a music room and courtroom. In Europe as in the rest of the world, it is often considered one of the most beautiful examples of the neoclassical style. But it was not until 2007 that it reopened its doors to the public, after a series of restorations and in the presence of Prince Charles. Today, St. George's Hall is a privileged witness to Liverpuldian history. From the entrance, an impressive organ sets the tone, like these admirable mosaics on the floor. As you walk along its floors, you will discover what its place, illustrious or less glorious, was in the city's past. During the Victorian era, its walls contained a prison, while from 80,000, the city grew to 185,000 inhabitants between 1800 and 1900. The corridors and cells give an idea of the conditions of imprisonment of prisoners, who were sometimes sent to Australian prison colonies after conviction. We also visit the trial room and the criminal court. On a lighter note, the Great Hall Viewing Gallery served as a reception and ballroom. It offers beautifully crafted beds and opulent ceilings. On the ground floor, a pleasant tea room overlooks the St John's Garden.
