NATIONAL WATERWAYS MUSEUM
Located in Ellesmere Harbour, at the mouth of the Manchester Ship Canal, this facility brings together the largest barges collection in the world. Some visit, but it is at the heart of the museum that we discover the history of this huge network of canals across Britain between 1760 and 1820, with the rise of the Industrial Revolution. In this era of demographic explosion and acceleration of production, these new routes of communication allowed food to be transported and to transport raw materials such as coal between cities in an efficient and cheap way. You can also discover, a still in operation and a pleasant coffee with terrace on the banks. On the outside of the site, the Centaur is being boarded for 30-minute cruises to discover these canals to the industrial past and their inhabitants: swans, rugs, ducks and cormorants… Check the schedules at the museum.
