ARMITT MUSEUM
The library at the origin of this small museum was founded in 1909 by Mary Ann Armitt, so that the cultural activity of the region could be a sanctuary. Beatrix Potter, a lighthouse of the Lake District, was a convinced supporter and his watercolours remains the main piece of the current establishment. We also learn a lot about the other artists of the time and local history, but the surprise comes mainly from Kurt Schwitters, famous painter Allemand German. Condemned to flee the Nazis who classèrent him as «degenerated», he arrived in Ambleside in the most complete destitution. So to say reduced to begging, he began painting views of the village and surrounding areas to sell them. These are the works that we discover today.
