GREAT RIGG & FAIRFIELD
It's certainly the most beautiful route from Grasmere but wait for it to climb! The terrain is, however, quite feasible and the panorama on the whole park is incredible. From the village, join the A 591 at Swan Lane and Swan Hotel. Take the road at the angle of the latter and then hire yourself in the second right, preceded by a wooden sign indicating "Greenhead Gill and Alcock Tarn". Once at the end, make sure to take the path that leaves left along the wall and not right to Heron Pike or Alcock Tarn. From here, the climb is continuous, first to the rock piton of Stone Arthur, and then to the magnificent summit of Great Rigg. Fairfield is only 1,5 km away… When you have reached it, take the time to explore its vast summit. In the east and northeast, the peaks of Hartsop Above How and St Sunday Crag are discovered. In the north-West are Grisedale Tarn, Dollywaggon Pike, Nethermost Pike and Helvellyn. To the south you can see lakes Grasmere, Windermere and Coniston Water. To go down, you can go back to your steps or take a longer loop by Heron Pike.
