CATHEDRAL DURHAM
This cathedral of the most beautiful Norman style dates from the 12th and 13th centuries, but its construction began in the 11th century. Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, its Romanesque architecture is absolutely breathtaking and imposing. Buried here are Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne and the Venerable Bede, the first great historian in Great Britain, whose deep visions, although very much influenced by the interests of the Vatican, are profound. Don't miss the stained glass windows and the restful cloister where scenes from the Harry Potter films were shot. It is one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the northern half of England, as are the cathedrals of York, Lincoln or Chester. A new attraction called Open Treasure is now available. It allows visitors to admire the collections of historical and artistic objects previously inaccessible on the site, as well as some rooms, such as dormitories and the large kitchen. Coffee and shop on site.
