This cathedral, which was built mainly in the 14th and 15th centuries, has a tower of rare beauty in the shape of a crown. It is called the Lantern Tower because there was once a light at its top to guide boats. There are only four similar towers in the country, (including the one at St Giles Church in Edinburgh) and this is the oldest (1470). According to legend, prisoners from the northern part of the border were kidnapped there in 1644 to prevent their compatriots from attacking the cathedral.
