Budget & Tips
Hotels. Today there are more than a thousand hotels in Moscow. Since the beginning of 2010 the hotel complex has been considerably modernized. Moscow is the political and economic capital, a major business tourism city and the hotels, from the median price to superior comfort, are regularly full, so it is highly recommended to get there early.
Accommodation is the most expensive thing in Moscow. If you have chosen to stay in a hotel, we advise you to make a reservation (make a phone call or send an email) to make sure that there are places available and to request a written confirmation in order to get your visa. It is best to go through a travel agency that has prices for certain hotels and will take care of your visa at the same time.
Bed and breakfast. Bed and Breakfast options are also available. The local agencies will be able to provide you with host families and, if you want to make yourself comfortable, apartments for rent.
Youth hostels. Youth hostels (especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg) are slowly increasing in number but the market is still very fragile and is not part of the welcoming culture of Moscow and Russia. The establishments open and close very quickly and few of them manage to maintain a standard, reliable and stable quality of service.
Campsites. The backpacker will find it difficult to find where to put his backpack. If there are camping areas on the outskirts of cities, it is not the kind of house to arrive unexpectedly.
For food lovers
As in all countries with a harsh climate, the Russian breakfast is consistent: a piece of bread with cheese, a hard-boiled egg or sausage, coffee or tea, sometimes with milk.
