The monastery was founded on the southern bank of the Yaousa River in 1360. The main building, St. Saviour's Cathedral, built in the early 15th century, is one of the oldest monuments in Moscow. Nevertheless, it is the personality of the monk and icon painter Andrei Rublev (1360-1430) that gives the monastery its full dimension. The refectory has been converted into a museum of ancient art and the museum of culture located within the walls contains many Orthodox icons.
