The oldest synagogue in Moscow is actually quite recent. It was permitted for a brief period of tolerance by the Tsarist regime towards Russian Jews in 1887, but was then prohibited before the building work was completed in 1892. It was not until the first Russian revolution in 1905 that work was resumed and since then the synagogue has been in continuous operation, even during the Soviet era, which had its own complicated relationship with Judaism.
