DANILOVSKY MONASTERY
Founded in 1282, it was the first fortified monastery in Moscow, named after the first prince of the city, Daniel, son of Alexander Nevsky. In 1930, the Soviet authorities requisitioned the religious buildings and put them at the disposal of the political police, turning the place into a prison. The complex, today rehabilitated and of an immaculate whiteness, was given back to the Church in 1983. It is today here that the Orthodox patriarch of Russia lives. Off-center, it deserves a visit as one of the three great monasteries with Donskoy or Novodyevichiy.
