In the extension of Leninsky prospekt, south of Oktyabrskaya Square, there is a fortified monastery founded in 1593. Its brick ramparts, punctuated by 12 towers, contain two slightly older cathedrals: the old cathedral which houses the icon of the Virgin of the Don, protector of the Russians against the Tatars in the battle of 1591, and the "new" cathedral, more central, built a century later in the Russian baroque style.
Monks still live there, in complete autarky in the middle of this 21st century capital.
