In the first millennium AD, when Vladimir I christened the Kiev Rus', Moscow did not exist. To make up for this, in front of the main entrance to the Kremlin now stands the colossal statue of Prince Vladimir, known as "the Red Sun". This colossal 17.75-metre monument was inaugurated a few years ago on Friday 4 November (the Day of National Unity in Russia) by Vladimir Putin and Patriarch Kirill in a ceremony as solemn as it was brief. In the aftermath of the Ukrainian crisis, not everyone appreciated the gesture.
