POND OF THE PATRIARCHS
The area around the Patriarch's ponds is home to the boutiques of young Russian designers.
Today, the Patriarchs' Pond area is a great place to live. This small watering place is very popular with the city's inhabitants at any time of the year and it also has a long history that begins when the Moscow patriarchs chose this place as their residence and ordered the construction of three ponds to raise fish. In the 19th century, two of the ponds were drained and a park was built around the remaining one.
Since then, the park and its pond have become a popular place for Muscovites. In winter, there are crowds of people skating on the frozen ice of this natural ice rink and socializing with friends, while in summer there are families sitting under the shade of the trees enjoying a quiet moment by the pond and having a picnic among joggers and other sportsmen. Over the years, the Patriarchs' Pond has acquired an aura in the minds of Muscovites and is the scene of many cultural works. In the 1990s, the city of Moscow considered erecting a statue of Mikhail Bulgakov there: the opening scene of his most famous novel The Master and Margarita depicts a springtime meeting there. The project was finally abandoned: instead, you can see a statue of the fabulist Ivan Krylov and the animals from his fables arranged around the pond.
