IZMAILOVO MARKET
Go on a souvenir hunt in this Russian version of Disneyland Castle, whose décor imitates a medieval kremlin.
Izmaĩlovo is home to Moscow's largest flea market, in an artificial setting imitating a medieval kremlin. The efforts made to attract tourists are not unlike Disneyland. Yet the place remains a rather authentic flea market, and Muscovites and foreigners alike come here to buy cheap clothes, handicrafts, Soviet bric-a-brac, jewelry and carpets. The market has its own rhythm: it is busier in the morning and in the summer; on weekdays, prices and services are geared towards locals, while on weekends it is aimed at tourists.
City dwellers know that the adjacent estate is a very pleasant place to relax. You can go to the large forest adjacent to the exit of theMo Izmaylovskaya and you will find the Tsar's Palace, a real fortress surrounded by walls. On the territory of the park there are other buildings of the 17th century: the Mostovaya Tower (a place of executions), the Intercession Cathedral, a prototype of the Assumption Cathedral of the Kremlin, the Western and Eastern Gates. It was also on the Izmaylovskie Ponds that Peter I proudly paraded his small boat "botik" - the first piece of the Russian fleet. Unfortunately for you, Peter I's botik no longer sails on these smooth waters and is now in St. Petersburg where it attracts many tourists. However, you can still go to the middle of the ponds, where there is a small island that can be reached by a bridge.
