SOKOLNIKI PARK
From the end of November to the beginning of March, Sokolniki Park is replaced by an ice rink for the enjoyment of young and old.
The Sokolniky Park is remarkably preserved thanks to its ancient status as a hunting reserve for the Tsars. Its name is derived from the Russian word for hawk, sokol, since hawk hunting was favoured here. During the imperial period, the estate attracted many painters - for example, it appears in the works of Issak Levitan and Alexei Savrassov. Today it is the oldest and largest park in Moscow, known for its beautiful flower arrangements and a large rose garden, which is worth a visit in season. There are several pleasant ponds in the park area.
One of them is the Elk Island (Lossiny Ostrov), preserved by Ivan the Terrible almost 5 centuries ago. On Saturday afternoons, on the platform of the "Veranda of Dances", there is a very popular ball for senior citizens who would not miss the opportunity to waltz and dance a polka every week. This island illustrates the place of the Park in modern Moscow life. It is harmoniously integrated between the past and the present. Numerous cultural and sporting activities take place here, as well as numerous exhibitions and festivals; while the paintings by Savrasov or Shishkin in the Tretyakov Gallery remind us that its shady alleys, installed at the turn of the 18th century, were a favourite place for aristocratic strolls, picnics and peasant festivals.
In short, if you have the time, don't hesitate to go there, rent rollerblades, then a boat and enjoy the nature.
