VELKE NÁMĚSTÍ
In the center of the most beautiful square in the city stands a stunning plague column. It dates from 1717 and is surrounded by a large number of statues.
The cathedral Sv. Ducha (Holy Spirit) is located west of the first one, near the tourist office. It was founded in 1307 by Elisabeth, the widow of Wenceslas II. It is one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in the country with its brick towers, each standing 40 meters high. The interior is very sober, but embellished by colorful stained glass windows.
Right next door stands the White Tower (Bílá věž), attached to the small Baroque church of St. Clement. Built in 1580, it is 72 meters high. It houses one of the largest bells in the country, called Augustine, cast in 1506. It weighs just under 10 tons. You can see it by climbing the tower. From the top, the view of the city is magnificent. Still on the west side of the square, you will notice the old town hall (Radnice) and its two towers. It dates from the 15th century and is now used for commercial purposes. The southern facade of Velké Náměstí is partly made up of two beautiful 17th-century buildings: the Bishop's Palace and the Jesuit College. The former, the most beautiful Baroque building in the city, is connected by a pretty arch to another house. Next to it stands the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin with its two beautiful towers. It was built in the 17th century for the Jesuits by the architect Carlo Lurago. The square is animated in all seasons: Christmas markets in winter, concerts in summer..
