CHLUM 1866 BATTLE MEMORIAL
10,000 Austrians lost their lives attacking the Prussian positions here. So much blood was shed in this military disaster that the local flora and fauna were affected and developed endemic species. The Memorial Museum will help you understand the course of the battle and immerse you in the implications of the time for Prussia and Austria. Helmuth von Moltke led his troops to victory, despite a seemingly clumsy plan of attack. This victory excluded Austria from the German Confederation. Otto von Bismarck, Minister-President of Prussia, was able to create the North German Confederation, of which he became Chancellor in 1867.
Inaugurated on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Sadowa, the Memorial was later completely rebuilt. The museography consists in putting the visitor in the atmosphere of the time. It all begins with a large model of the battlefield and the various highlights of the action. In the basement, films and a number of objects as well as weapons and uniforms allow visitors to become familiar with the different corps involved: artillery, infantry, cavalry and also the infirmary. A complete film on the political and military consequences of the battle closes the visit. Adjacent to the museum, the tower (Vyhlídkova věž), 60 m high (182 steps), was built in 1999 to provide a panoramic view of the battle site.
