HRUBÝ ROHOZEC CASTLE (HRAD HRUBÝ ROHOZEC)
The current castle, in Renaissance style, has a rather majestic appearance from the outside. But if the construction seems relatively recent, the site would date from the 14th century and would have seen the birth of a Gothic style castle composed of a tower, a courtyard and a residence surrounded by a high wall and a moat. Towards the end of the 15th century, the castle became a residence and two additional buildings were built. The last renovations, undertaken by the von Wartenberg family at the beginning of the 17th century, completed the transition of the castle into a stately home. From 1628 to 1945, the French family of Mikuláš Des Fours became the owner and used Hrubý Rohozec as the family seat. At the end of the Second World War, the residence became state property. In 2008, renovations began with the aim of opening the castle to the public: a visit to the interior is a real trip back in time with the decoration and furniture from the 1930s (based on photos of the Des Fours family). The gardens are beautiful and give access to a cave from which you can observe the valley and the river. As always with castles in the Czech Republic, there are two different tours, each with a different theme and duration, which you can choose from depending on your interests and the time you have available. The castle has about 20 rooms in total!
