JAN BECHER MUSEUM AND BECHEROVKA STORE
Produced in Karlovy Vary since 1807, Becherovka was initially a medical treatment based on small bitter drops, developed by a local herbalist, Dr. Becher. The drink was first sold in 1807 in the form of drops for stomach problems, but as soon as his son Jan went into business, he started to produce alcohol and patented the flat, green bottles he had invented. Napoleon was a fervent consumer, for his stomach aches. About twenty plants, including cloves and cinnamon, make up a mixture whose precise recipe is still kept secret but which is still almost 40 degrees. But since it is recommended for health, we quickly forget this little aftertaste of pharmacy ... The Czechs are not mistaken, and the Becherovka has become a digestive very popular, which reminds by its sweet and spicy taste of Christmas candy.
Dr. Becher's liqueur, which is called "the 13th spring of the city", is consumed in the cafes and restaurants of Karlovy Vary. It is the most famous alcohol in the Czech Republic. Ironically, Becherovka was bought by the Pernod Ricard group, but never mention it to a Czech. Next to the museum, you will find the brand's store (open every day). The bottles of Becherovka are cheaper than in the souvenir stores and the range is wider (you will taste four of them while visiting the museum).
