CASTLE OF TŘEBOŇ (ZÁMEK)
It forms a large part of the southern area of the historic center, between Zámecký Park and Masarykovo Náměstí. It is a very open, unpretentious complex. It consists of various courtyards and buildings of great variety. It is a Renaissance castle dating from the 16th century, erected on the site of a medieval fort by the architect Domenico Comete for the Rožmberks. It has been remodeled many times since then. During the Thirty Years' War, it was plundered by the Swedes, who stole, among other things, the books from the rich library. At the end of the war, it became the property of the Schwarzenberg family for almost three centuries, until 1920, the date of the land reforms. The castle houses many important documents related to this influential family.
From the garden, you can access a permanent exhibition presenting the nature of Třeboň and its surroundings. Enough to learn a lot about the regional flora and fauna, but also about local traditions and the interaction between human societies and the natural environment, and how they have shaped the landscapes (open in April and October every day except Monday from 9am to 5pm, from May to September every day from 9am to 5pm, the rest of the year only on Wednesdays from 2 to 4pm). The explanatory panels are dubbed in French. You can also contact a local association that takes in injured or endangered wild animals and gives tours of its farm.Did you know?
