ZELNÝ TRH
The wide, gently sloping square of Zelný trh is an interesting landmark to start your tour of the city center (before or after the castle). Zelný trh means "Cabbage Market". If you want to see its incomparably lively market since the 13th century, come in the morning: the whole square is bustling, vociferous, teeming. There is a good smell of vegetables, dill, and fruits. In fact, this market is often frequented by villagers from around Brno, who are traditionally known to be very clever and resourceful, and who come here to make a small profit. The square is surrounded by various buildings that are more or less in harmony. To the east is the Reduta Theater, where the young Mozart performed in 1767. The eye is especially attracted by the huge Parnassus fountain (1695), the work of the Viennese Fischer Von Erlah. It is a stunning example of Baroque naturalism with its artificial grotto-like appearance. The statue that stands at the top of it represents Europe, triumphant, who is defeating a dragon. Going up to Petrov, Starobrňenska and Dominikánské streets connect Zelný trh and Dominikánské námeští to Petrov and are the most beautiful streets in the city, lined with colorful, ornate buildings, flowering in summer. You can take the first street to Petrov and then go back down to Dominikánské via the other. The two streets are connected by a charming passageway leading to a small enclosed courtyard lined with arcades. Today, there are trendy cafés and art galleries.
