THE MORAVIAN GALLERY (MORAVSKÁ GALLERY)
The Moravian Gallery is spread over 3 sites:
The Museum of Decorative Arts (Uměleckoprůmyslové muzeum). Address: Husova 14. In this neo-Renaissance palace, one will see a beautiful collection of decorative art, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Furniture, glassware, porcelain, various objects... Their origin is not always certain, even if we know that they furnished the prestigious residences of the region, but these having been nationalized during the Soviet period, the course of the furniture was not always respectful of the traceability. Interesting and really not boring.
Governor's Palace (Místodržitelský palác). Address: Moravské náměstí 1a. It is part of the former Augustinian monastery, which was completely transformed in the 18th century by Moric Grimm. The monumental entrance and the carved portal, the work of J.-L. Weber, are noteworthy. In 1783, the building became the seat of the local administration. A plaque commemorates Napoleon's visits to Brno in 1805 and 1809. Today, the place is dedicated to temporary exhibitions offered by the Moravian Gallery, ranging from medieval sculpture to contemporary art. Usually five or six exhibitions are held at the same time.
Pražák Palace (Pražákův palác). Address: Husova 18. This site is more specifically devoted to Czech art of the 20th century: paintings, sculptures, etc. One will see works by František Bílek, Antonín Procházka or Jan Zrzavý. For an approach to local painting.
