COLUMN OF THE HOLY TRINITY
It is 32 meters high and was built between 1716 and 1754 by Vaclav Render. It is the largest group of Baroque statues in Central Europe decorating a single sculptural work: 18 saints, 12 torchbearers, 6 bas-reliefs representing the bodies of apostles and the whole crowned by the Holy Trinity, no less. No wonder the column is considered the center of the town. At the top, you can see the archangel Michael. Underneath, on the base, arranged in three levels, are the saints connected with the life of Jesus (Joseph, John the Baptist), as well as St. Lawrence and St. Jerome, then a tribute to Saints Cyril and Methodius who brought Christianity to Moravia in 863, and then a tribute to Blaise of Sebaste, an important figure for the Church of Olomouc. St. Adalbert and St. John Nepomuk, both venerated in the Czech Republic, are also identified. Further down, St. Maurice and St. Wenceslas (Vaclav) can be seen (there are churches dedicated to them in the city), as well as St. Florian, who protects against fires. St. John Sarkander, a martyr of the Thirty Years' War, is present although his canonization did not take place until 1995. He was one of the most important figures in Olomouc at that time. For this reason, the column has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000. You can go inside a small chapel to discover other bas-reliefs: Cain and Abel, Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Jesus on the Cross.
