PIAZZA DUCALE
The square is one of the most successful urban expressions of the Renaissance in Vigevano.
Opened between 1492 and 1494, the Piazza Ducale di Vigevano is one of the most accomplished urban expressions of the Renaissance. It was built by the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza. The harmony of the perfectly proportioned ensemble suggests that Leonardo da Vinci and Bramante took part in the design. Other local artists created columns, capitals, vaults, sculpted medallions and frescoes on three sides, which have unfortunately disappeared. The fourth side is closed by the baroque cathedral built in 1680.
