The nerve center of Crema, the piazza is lined with porticoes and surrounded by beautiful townhouses. Among them is the Palazzo Pretorio, today's town hall, recognizable by its Venetian lion effigy, a reminder of Venetian domination. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta closes the eastern side of the square, its red-brick facade in Lombard Gothic style featuring a beautiful rose window. Built between 1284 and 1341, it underwent numerous alterations over the centuries. The interior houses a fine painting by Guido Reni.
