The guided tour of the fortifications(the mura) gives access to what was once a real "warrior city". Surrounded by a wide moat, this astonishing architecture is made even more singular by its casematte, a long series of interconnected vaulted rooms, which were once used to facilitate the movement of guards and soldiers. But it is the old prisons that will attract more attention. It was from here that François I, defeated by the Spaniards in 1525, wrote to his mother: "All is lost, except honour".
