MUSEO DEL VIOLINO
Violin Museum exhibiting the masterpieces of the great dynasties of master violin makers in Cremona.
The pride of the city, the Violin Museum opened its doors in December 2013. Housed in the Palazzo dell'Arte, a rationalist architectural feat dating from the 1940s, visitors can finally discover the secrets of five centuries of violin making. Over 10 rooms, an avant-garde museography, supported by a panoply of multimedia installations and a rich collection of documents and archives, enables everyone, young and old, neophyte and expert alike, to enjoy an enticing journey around this exceptional instrument.
Each room is dedicated to a particular moment in the history of violin-making heritage, from the origins of the violin in the 15th century, through the history of the Cremona School, to the discovery of a violin-maker's workshop. The highlight of the visit is the Scrigno dei Tesori (the treasure chest), which displays masterpieces by the great dynasties of master violinmakers: Andrea Amati and his descendants (the Charles X, 1566 and the Hammerle, 1658), the great Antonio Stradivari (the Cremonese, 1715) and Giuseppe Guarneri dit del Gesù (the Stauffer, 1734). An entire section is dedicated to Stradivari and his world: models, wooden forms and tools of this great luthier, all about the man who made the Cremonese name famous the world over. A well-balanced multi-sensory journey through craftsmanship, art, creativity, sounds, fragrances, instruments and objets d'art, helps visitors relive the epic of violin making. This is undoubtedly a fascinating museum for music enthusiasts, and one of the finest in Lombardy.
