MUSEO CIVICO ALA PONZONE
Palace housing the Ala Ponzone art gallery and the Stanze per la Musica in Cremona.
A superb example of a Renaissance palace in the centre of Cremona, Palazzo Affaitati now houses the Ala Ponzone Picture Gallery and the Stanze per la Musica.
Pinacoteca. This vast collection reflects the evolution of painting in Cremona and its region from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. More than 2,000 works, and among the most remarkable: theArmadio del Platina, a cabinet with fully inlaid doors from the 15th century, Arcimboldo's L'Ortolano (1590), an amusing still life of vegetables that can be reversed into human nature, and a sorrowful St. Francis in meditation by Caravaggio. The last rooms contain an interesting series of oriental porcelains and enamels from Limousin. The exhibition of paintings continues on thethird floor with paintings from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and finally on thefourth floor with interesting panels from a sixteenth-century painted wooden ceiling.
Stanze per la Musica. Since December 2013, another wing of the palace has housed the Stanze per la Musica (the rooms for music), an unparalleled collection of more than 60 ancient musical instruments. The collection covers four centuries of the history of violin making in Europe. On display are unique and original examples of violins, violas, pochettes, and guitars from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, made by expert luthiers. A small nod to the French guitar made in Mirecourt by Aubry-Maire, which belonged to Lorenzo Pagans, the famous Spanish singer depicted in a painting by Degas now in the Musée d'Orsay (1871).
