CHIESA DELLA BEATA VERGINE INCORONATA
Masterpiece of the Renaissance containing the funeral monument of Vespasian Gonzaga.
This Renaissance masterpiece contains the funeral monument of Vespasian Gonzaga, all in polychrome marble, the work of Giovan Battista della Porta (1592). In the centre stands the bronze statue of the prince, represented as Marcus Aurelius, by Leone Leoni, a sculptor at the Spanish court. Originally intended for the exterior, it seems far too large for the niche in which it stands. Dating from 1586, the octagonal plan of the building is reminiscent of the Virgin's crown.
