CHIESA DI SANT'ANDREA
Masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, one of the main works of Leon Battista Alberti.
A masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance (1472), it is one of the main works of the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The façade surprises by the harmony of its proportions; the classical architectural language, tympanum, triumphal arch, pilasters and niches, is skilfully employed. In the crypt are kept the sacred vases containing the sand and blood of Christ collected at the time of his crucifixion. Longino, a Roman centurion, is said to have collected them and brought them to Mantua during his peregrinations. A chapel guards Andrea Mantegna's tomb.
